Eugene Olevsky, PhD

Prof. Olevsky is the Dean and Distinguished Professor of the College of Engineering at San Diego State University (USA). He has two MSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics and PhD in Materials Engineering. He is the author of over 500 publications and more than 150 invited presentations in sintering research. He has supervised more than 100 postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students. Prof. Olevsky is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of ASM International, Humboldt Fellow, and a Full Member of the International Institute of Science of Sintering.

Olivia A. Graeve, PhD

Prof. Graeve joined the University of California (USA) in 2012, and is currently Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Director of the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials and Systems, and Faculty Director of the IDEA Engineering Student Center. Prof. Graeve holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, and a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California. Her area of research focuses on the design and processing of new materials for extreme environments, including extremes of temperature, pressure, and radiation. Prof. Graeve has been involved in many activities related to the recruitment and retention of women and Hispanic students in science and engineering and has received several prestigious awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in 2020.  Previously, she was inducted into the Tijuana Walk of Fame (2014), the Mexican Academy of Engineering (2016), the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2019).  She has been named Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2017) and Forbes Magazine named her one of the 100 Most Powerful Women of Mexico (2017).

Claude Estournès, PhD

Dr. Claude Estournès is CNRS Research Director at CIRIMAT in Toulouse (France). In 1992, he got his PhD in the field of Materials Science at the University of Bordeaux (lab.: ICMCB). The same year he got an assistant professor position at the University of Strasbourg (lab.: IPCMS). In 2004, he joined the CNRS in Toulouse (lab.: CIRIMAT). His main activities are devoted to the synthesis, preparation and densification of materials (with nano- and micro-scales, composite, multi-layered system, ceramic, polymer, glass etc.) by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), Cold Sintering (CSP) and Additive Manufacturing (FA) technologies, to the development of novel, specific and multi-functional architectures (FGM, micro- and meso-porous composite structure, sandwiches etc.) to tailor specific properties and studies of densification mechanisms and finite element modelling – Electro-Thermal-Mechanical and Microstructural (ETMM) of the SPS and CSP process. He is co-author of 206 publications in internationally refereed journals with ~6400 citations and a h-index of 43, of about 111 and 44 invited conferences and seminars, 237 international conference contributions, 2 book chapters and 17 patents +11 PCT. From 2004 to 2016 he was the Scientific Coordinator of the CNRS National Platform on Spark Plasma Sintering (PNF2/CNRS). Between 2008 and 2011, he was the director of the national research group on Spark Plasma Sintering federating more than 250 researchers from 32 French laboratories and 11 industries. He was the chairman of the 2nd and 3rd International Workshop on Spark Plasma Sintering held respectively in Capbreton 2011 and Toulouse 2014. In 2013, he received the Pfeil Award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. 2016–2018 he was the leader of the team “Nanocomposites et Nanotubes de Carbone (NNC) at CIRIMAT. In 2016, he is co-founder of the spin-off Norimat. Since 2019, he is the President of the Network GFDM-FACE.

Salvatore Grasso, PhD

Professor, Department of Material Science and Engineering

Prof. Salvatore Grasso is a professor in ceramics at Southwest Jiaotong University (China) located in the beautiful Chengdu (Panda Base). His doctoral work (2008–2011) at the University of Tsukuba-NIMS (National Institute for Material Science) Japan was focused on Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and other Electric Current Assisted Sintering Techniques. While at Queen Mary University of London (2011–2017) he worked on the development of Flash Spark Plasma Sintering techniques. Thanks to the generous funding from NSFC (China), in 2017 he established FAME (Field Assisted Material Engineering) research group. His current research is around the use of intense Electric and Magnetic fields (e.g. current up to 0.5 MA and magnetic field strength up to 15 T) to develop novel processing techniques to design unprecedented materials properties. Environmental sustainability is key aspect driving research towards intelligent manufacturing. He is currently an editor of the European Ceramic Society. He has published 160 peer reviewed articles and 10 patents.

José Manuel Torralba, PhD

Prof. Torralba is a Fellow in the two most important Powder Metallurgy associations in the world: FAPMI and FEPMA (first European to be Fellow at the same time in Europe and USA). He has participated in more than 80 International Advisory Committees at International Conferences, in about 35 competitive funded projects (among which five EU-projects and one NSF-USA project) and in several research evaluation panels (including the EU Research Framework Programmes) some of which in Israel and New Zealand. Throughout his career, Prof. Torralba has constantly striven for a holistic approach, being involved in a wide number of academic activities: teaching, research, innovation, university management and management of research programmes and science communication. He also regularly participates in activities related to mentoring, research integrity, new ethics in science and to the promotion of healthy conditions in research labs. He has been an active supervisor of PhD students and has created a good international network of former students in academia and industry. Prof. Torralba also collaborates regularly with two NGOs (supporting a secondary school in Kenya and providing scientific divulgation lectures in jails).

Alexander Laptev, PhD

Prof. Laptev received his PhD degree from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 1978. From 1978 till 2014 he lectured at Donbass State Engineering Academy (Ukraine). This work he combined with external research at Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany), Drexel University (USA), Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (France) and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). In 1978 he was habilitated for professor degree. From 2014 to 2016 he was working as a researcher at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Since 2016 he is an emeritus professor and independent researcher. Prof. Laptev has published around 240 papers in mechanical and materials engineering. His current scientific interest is application of electromagnetic field in synthesis and processing of functional materials.

Johannes Trapp, PhD

Johannes Trapp received his PhD in Engineering from Technische Universität Dresden in 2017 for his work on “The mechanisms of field assisted sintering in metallic systems”. He now works on additive manufacturing, focusing on selective electron beam melting (EBM), as well as on spark plasma sintering at the Dresden Lab of Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (IFAM). He also works on other powder metallurgical processes, capacitor discharge compaction, joining techniques, high energy milling and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. He lectures “Sinter Materials” and “Materials for Energy Applications” at the TU Dresden. Johannes Trapp is a regular reviewer for multiple journals, published more than 10 papers and holds one patent.

Paweł Wyżga received his Bachelor’s (2015) and Master’s (2016) degrees in materials engineering from the AGH University of Science and Technology (Poland). He is currently a PhD candidate at the Institute of Experimental Physics TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany) under the supervision of Prof. Roman Gumeniuk. His research project is focused on the studies of structural and thermoelectric properties of thiospinels.

Tomasz Rybak graduated Technical Physics at Poznan University of Technology (Poland) in a specialty of Physics of Materials and Nanotechnologies in 2006, distinguished for swimming achievements. He started his professional career in Metal Forming Institute in Poznan in 2006. Tomasz was involved in purchasing first SPS machine for the Institute. In 2013, Tomasz has moved to the UK, joining Element Six, Global Innovation Center, working on PCD Oil&Gas rock cutters. In 2017, Tomasz joined John Crane, Global Core Technologies, as a Senior Materials Engineer, working with sintered ceramics for mechanical seals application. Tomasz is an author of 5 international patents.
